The Government of India brings an AI revolution for the country by adopting artificial intelligence tools in agriculture and the consumer helpline for enhanced efficiency.

New Delhi, Feb. 07, 2025: The Government of India is automating agriculture and consumer complaint management. AI is being implemented by the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare to provide better services to farmers and consumers.

The information regarding the use of AI in agriculture was provided by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Ramnath Thakur, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

AI in Agriculture: Technology Adoption to Change Farmers’ Lives.

To solve the problems of Indian farmers, the government is using AI to improve output, control crop losses, and respond to farming-related questions. Some agricultural features which are driven by AI technology include:

Kisan e-Mitra: An AI Chatbot for Farmers

Kisan e-Mitra is an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist farmers. It helps in resolving queries related to the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. This chatbot can use many languages and is being broadened to include more government services.

AI Powered Pest Surveillance System.

The National Pest Surveillance System is an AI and Machine Learning (ML) based program for identifying pest outbreaks.This system offers timely pest analysis for counteraction. Farmers can use this system to minimize damages to crops brought on by climate change.

Monitoring Crop Health With AI Automation

Analyzed photographs from the field allow the AI-powered analytics to monitor the health of crops.
The AI technology analyzes the growth of crops such as rice and wheat with the aid of soil moisture, weather information, and Satellite imagery. To ensure timely action, this aids in the prompt identification of diseases and missing elements along with nutrient deficiencies.

AI Enhanced National Consumer Helpline: Grievance Redressal Made Easy and Expedite

The AI technology has been used by the Government of India to make the grievance redressal system more efficient via the National Consumer Helpline or NCH. The most sophisticated NCH AI system dissects the grievances by sectors with the aim of enhancing resolution efficacy.

  • Faster resolution is achieved by AI sorting the complaints and directing them to sector-specific categories.
  • Important sectors include: E-commerce, Banking, Digital Payments, Consumer Electronics, Real Estate, Oil Industry, and Vehicles.
Effect of AI on Consumer Complaints Redressal
  • 10X call volume increase: From 12,553 (December 2015) to 1,55,138 calls in December, 2024.
  • Time for solving complaints is shortened: For 66.26 days (2023), time of disposal is reduced to 48 days (2024).
  • Increased grievance registration: Monthly grievances escalated from 37,062 in 2017 to 1,12,468 in 2024.

Success Stories of AI in Consumer Helpline

AI in National Consumer Helpline has autonomously settled many consumer conflicts in diverse branches such as broadband, e commerce, consumer electronics, digital payments, and even petroleum, resulting in quicker resolutions with better faith in the system.

Role of Convergence Partners in Protection of Consumer Rights

  • Highly complaint loaded firms must consolidate as NCH convergence partners.
  • More than 1,038 firms, up from 263 in 2017, joined.
  • These companies must take the lead in resolving consumer complaints.

With AI enabled domain specific analysis, firms are able to resolve the complaints in a shorter time increasing consumer satisfaction and trust.
