Canadian PM Trudeau to Hold PC Amid Stepping Down Rumours

Canadian PM Trudeau will be conducting a news conference today at 10:45 AM in Ottawa (15:45 GMT, 09:15 PM IST)  (According to the BBC report). Canadian media is reporting that Trudeau is planning to formally announce his resignation from the leadership of the Liberal Party. However, he would still serve as the Prime Minister until a new leader has been appointed from the Party.

Resignation Pressure Ample

Pressure on Trudeau has been mounting from within his party and his opponents to resign. The pressure mounted in December when his finance minister suddenly resigned, causing serious political disruption in Ottawa. More than 20 Liberal MPs have reportedly signed a pledge urging him to resign, which shows internal dissent.

Will Trudeau’s Gamble Against India and pro-Khalistan Policy Prove Costly?

In terms of international relations, especially when it comes to India, Trudeau has received serious criticism. His support for Khalistan separatism has worsened the situation even more. The worrying conduct of Canada towards Khalistan activists in Canada has been a serious point of conflict between the two countries and Trudeau has been unable to provide any tangible solution as he faces growing criticism in India bilateral trade relations. The allegations he pinned on India in September 2024 further derailed the already fragile relations of the two countries, harming their diplomatic and trade relations. Such a gambit was viewed to be politically foolish and invited criticism on both the domestic and international front. The decline in the relationship between its Canada and India is believed to have affected the popularity of Trudeau among the voters and his party.

Conclusion

The events of this news conference may be pivotal for politics in Canada as a country. Both in Canada and across the globe, Trudeau has increasingly been under fire for his policies. His deteriorating relations with India and the emergence of political dissent internally have weakened his effectiveness to lead. The tighter the hints of resignation are, the more apparent it gets that there is about to be a paradigm shift in the politics over Canada. The way Trudeau forged strategic relationships across the world will unquestionably dictate the future of Canada.
