Delhi CM announcement: The BJP appointed Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, will take the oath on Feb 20, 2025

New Delhi, February 19, 2025: Ending two weeks of suspense, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday named Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. She is a first-time MLA who won the Shalimar Bagh seat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes.

Newly elected Chief Minister of Delhi Smt. Gupta, accompanied by state BJP observers, met Lt. Governor Shri VK Saxena today to stake claim to the government.

Rekha Gupta is the fourth woman to hold this post after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. She will officially take charge as the 9th Chief Minister of Delhi on February 20, 2025.

BJP brings an end to AAP’s 10-year rule

BJP swept the elections in Delhi and won 48 seats out of 70. This triumph ushers the party back into power in the national capital after 27 years. Rekha Gupta replaces AAP’s Atishi tomorrow, bringing an end to Arvind Kejriwal’s decade-long rule.

New Delhi MLA Parvesh Verma is expected to be the Deputy CM. BJP sources confirm that the cabinet will have six members, representing key communities such as Jats, Baniyas, Punjabis, Poorvanchalis, Brahmins, and Dalits.

Swearing-In Ceremony at Ramlila Maidan

Rekha Gupta will take the oath of office at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan tomorrow at 12:15 PM.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and other senior leaders of the NDA will participate in the program.

Amit Shah wished her on X and said, “I am confident that under your leadership, BJP will work hard to make Delhi one of the best capitals in the world.”

JP Nadda also praised her leadership, saying, “With PM Modi’s guidance, Delhi will witness new heights of development.”

Who is Rekha Gupta

Rekha Gupta has been a political activist since her college days. She began her career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and was the President of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). She later became a Delhi Councillor.

She contested the Delhi Assembly elections in 2015 and 2020 but lost both times to AAP’s Bandana Kumari. However, in 2025, she won by a huge margin of 29,595 votes.

Born in 1974 in Haryana’s Jind district, she moved to Delhi with her family at the age of two. She did her education in Delhi and has an LLB degree.

The new CM was welcomed by Arvind Kejriwal, who said, “Many congratulations to Rekha Gupta ji. I hope she fulfills all the promises given to the people of Delhi.”. We will assist her in each step for the development of the city.”

Outgoing Delhi CM Atishi also wished her best and promised full cooperation if required.
