Delhi Elections: Kejriwal Alleges Yamuna Poisoning, Compares to Hiroshima

Kejriwal accuses BJP of Yamuna poisoning, which results in election controversy

The Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief, Arvind Kejriwal, took the political drama a step further by accusing the BJP-ruled Haryana government of poisoning the Yamuna River, which seemed like taking the Delhi elections to a new low. He took this opportunity to defend his statements over the Yamuna and said that if the Delhi Jal Board had let the river water into Delhi, it could have caused a’mass genocide‘ in the city.

In his statement, Kejriwal emphasized the comparison, describing the above incident as biological warfare like that of the United States during World War II. He claimed that the BJP added a highly lethal chemical, ammonia, to the Yamuna water with an intention to pollute the Delhi water supply and create panic in the city in the run-up to the elections.

Strong Allegations By Kejriwal

According to Kejriwal, “People in Delhi drink water from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The BJP government in Haryana has contaminated the water of Yamuna. If the Delhi Jal Board had not blocked this water, it would have led to a genocide in Delhi. Such measures are not taken in a democracy. They are employed by enemies.”

The AAP leader went on to say that one-third of Delhi was facing water scarcity because it’s treatment plants were not able to bear the extent of its contamination.

Responses from BJP and the Government of Haryana

Political opponents have widely critiqued the comparison that Kejriwal made regarding Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as political commentary on biological warfare. Nayab Singh Saini, the Haryana Chief Minister, termed Kejriwal’s allegations as groundless. He blamed Kejriwal for telling lies to deflect public attention from his disastrous performance towards Delhi’s water distribution management in the last ten years.

“It is Kejriwal’s habit to allege and run away. There is no water scarcity; the issue lies in Delhi’s distribution system. He should stop making baseless claims and start working for the people of Delhi,” said the chief minister of Haryana.

In response, the Haryana BJP, in a post on X, said, Arvind Kejriwal is a classic example of how low someone can stoop to achieve their petty and wicked political interests.

Involvement of Elections Commission

The allegations that Kejriwal made attuned the attention of the Election Commission and subsequently followed up with the Haryana government to get a detailed report. Simultaneously, AAP leaders and Chief Ministers Atishi and Bhagwant Mann have already contacted the Election Commission to step in and resolve the water shortage issue.

It is noted that AAP is facing a strong challenge from the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for February 5, with results to be declared on February 8, further intensifying the controversy.

Water Politics Surrounding in Delhi Elections

Delhi has witnessed water management issues multiple times, which has been rather challenging over politics. Delhi has seen repeatedly AAP getting blamed by the BJP for not adequately cleaning the Yamuna. The same criticism now adds more shame to the continuous political blame game.

As polling day is now around the corner, the accusations alongside counter accusations have soared to new heights.

Conclusion: A Battle for Trust

The issue of Yamuna poisoning has now become a rallying point during the Delhi elections, revealing how much the AAP and BJP stand to gain or lose. Kejriwal’s remarks have sparked considerable discourse, but at the end of it all, the fate of the elections will be determined around these assertions and their consequences.

As the curtain rises on this political melodrama, the people of Delhi are looking for solutions to their water problems and also the answers with regards to whom they will cast their vote in the coming elections.
