IND vs ENG 3rd ODI: India Beat England by 142 Runs

IND vs ENG 3rd ODI: India Beat England by 142 Runs to Seal Series 3-0

The Indian squad is on a roll, as they performed outstandingly in their third ODI against England. This took place in Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, where India clinched a 142-run victory, thus achieving a clean sweep of wins at 3-0. In this game, Shubman Gill scored a brilliant hundred, and alongside Shreyas Iyer’s and Virat Kohli’s powerful performances, India set up an impressive total of 356/9. In the chase, England was bowled out for 214 in 34.2 overs, which was largely due to India’s superb clinical bowling performance.

This match will be remembered for launching an initiative, led by ICC chairman Jay Shah, to raise awareness about organ donation. Indian and England cricketers wore green armbands in support of the cause.

Batting Class: Gill, Kohli, and Iyer Steal The Show.

India lost the toss and batted first. Indian captain and opener Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just 1 run in the 2nd over, and India was once again on the back foot, but Shubman Gill (112 off 102) and Virat Kohli (52 off 55) put on a run to save the game by putting up an important partnership of 116 runs.

The Century of Gill: A remarkable young Indian vice captain and opener reached his 7th ODI’s century within 95 balls and captured everyone’s attention. He scored 14 fours and 3 sixes throughout the game. Gill makes history at Ahmedabad, becoming the first batter to record centuries in all three international formats (T-20i, ODI, Test) at a single venue. He has an IPL hundred also at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Contribution of Kohli: Kohli scored 52 runs with just 55 balls. He certainly assisted India in gaining momentum with a partnership of 116 off 107 balls with Gill until Adil Rashid got him out again.

Shreyas Iyer’s Support: Iyer played a remarkable inning, scoring 78 off 64 balls by forming a 104-run partnership with Gill. He reached his half-century in 43 balls.

Hardik Pandya’s Late Blitz: Pandya launched two sixes off Rasid and scored 17 off 9 balls, contributing to the blitz.

England’s Bowling Highlights: Rashid was England’s outstanding player, but Mark Wood bewitched India’s middle order as well. Rashid’s figures were 4/64 and Mark Woods were 3/45.

India was able to score 356 runs with the loss of all 10 wickets in 50 overs even after losing wickets in the last overs regularly.

England’s Struggles: Bright Start but Middle-Order Collapse

England started at a rapid pace at the game, starting with a score of fifty in 5.2 overs. Phil Salt (23 off 21) and Ben Duckett (34 off 22) had hope, but the clever moves of Arshdeep Singh (2/33) changed the game in India’s favor. He dismissed both openers within 10 overs. He took the wicket of Ducket when the score of England was 60. It was the big relief for Arshdeep because Duckett smashed him for four straight boundaries in the previous over. When Salt was out, the score of England was 80 for 2 in 8.4 overs.

Tom Banton (38 off 41) and Joe Root (24 off 29) tried to get a hold of the rhythm of the innings, while Harshit Rana (2/31) and Axar Patel (2/22) were very effective, and soon England ran out of chances.

Atkinson’s late effort went in vain. The late surge by Gus Atkinson (38 off 19) came too late to make an impact. England were eventually bowled out for 214 in 34.2 overs, suffering a heavy 142-run defeat to India.

With this crushing defeat, England suffered their seventh loss in eight matches on this tour, following their 4-1 loss in the T20I series. This ODI whitewash raises concerns for England ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which begins on February 19.

Meanwhile, India’s dominant series win solidifies their reputation as a powerhouse in ODIs, with Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, and Arshdeep Singh emerging as key contributors.
