India managed to avoid the follow-on after a spirited comeback on Day 4 of the third Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. KL Rahul (84) and Ravindra Jadeja (77) played important innings, as India reached 252/9 at stumps. Trailing by 193 runs, India ensured that Australia will have to bat again after heroics from Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah in the last session. The final day now looms large, decisive to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series as it currently stands at 1-1.
KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja help India bounce back
India started the day at 51/4, but an early jolt came when skipper Rohit Sharma (10) edged a delivery from Pat Cummins. At 74/5, Australia looked more than dominant and ready to enforce the follow-on. However, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja stitched a solid 67-run partnership, frustrating the Australian bowlers. KL Rahul top-scored with a composed 84 runs, while Jadeja added a gritty 77, showing India’s determination to avoid follow-on embarrassment.
Bumrah and Akash Deep heroics rescue India.
When Jadeja went to Cummins, the Indians still needed 33 to avoid follow-on. But Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah, the lower-order duo, did well with an unbeaten last-wicket stand of 39 runs off 54 balls. Akash Deep was entertaining with 27 off 31*, including a huge six off Cummins that had the dressing room on its feet. He was well supported by Bumrah in a defiant 10 not out.India closed Day 4 at 252/9, ensuring Australia will have to bat again, opening up a potential draw.
Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc Excel for Australia
For Australia, it was Pat Cummins, at 4/80, again bowling at the right moment. Mitchell Starc’s 3/83 also troubled the Indians very much with his pace and swing. Nathan Lyon grabbed the precious wicket of Rahul, courtesy an unbelievable one-handed catch by Steve Smith at first slip. Australia’s bowlers dominated early but could not finish off the Indian tail as the light faded.
Rain intermissions and poor light stop the game
Day 4 is a very rain-delayed and fading light affair. Totally disrupting the rhythm of the game. The match seems increasingly poised for a soggy draw as bad weather is likely to remain in command on Day 5, too.
Tied Series at 1-1. Decision Day Awaits Tomorrow
With India still behind by 193 runs, it is all of Day 5 that will tell whether the third Test is going to be headed for a result. Australia would look for victory, while India would look to salvage a hard-fought draw on the final day. The five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains level at 1-1 and Australia needs to get early wickets tomorrow to seal victory.
