Australia Defeats India in 4th Test at MCG

Host Australia recorded win against India in 4th match of Border-Gavaskar trophy at MCG by 184 runs. This made the scoreline of the series 2-1 in favour of Australia.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant fought hard to achieve 340 targets, but ultimately fell short . India’s World Test Championship (WTC) points calculation has also taken a hit after this loss , Their PCT has gone down to 52.78%, placing them third in the table.

Nathan Lyon now surpasses Ashwin in terms of wickets claimed in test matches

The 4th test of Border-Gavaskar trophy proved to be a historic for Lyon as he becomes the 7th highest wicket taker overtaking R. Ashwin. Currently Lyon has 538 wickets while Ashwin was 537. His pressure performances were critical during this series in most of the matches which made the Australians win.

India’s Struggles While Batting On the Last Day

On the final day of the Test match, the worst was seen from the Indian team, as they suffered complete destruction while batting. The score was low when both KL Rahul (0) and Rohit Sharma (9) were dismissed by Pat Cummins early on in the innings.

At least for the good part of the day, the Indian innings was stabilized by Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored 84 runs off 208 balls. However, later his wicket became the topic of a fresh debate when a questionable DRS decision ruled him out despite no clear evidence of an edge.

Jaiswal did get some pace in the innings, as he made a partnership of 88 runs with Rishabh Pant(30). But susceptibility was India’s weak spot when Pant was looking to go big on Travis Head and was out, exposing the tail. The middle order, which comprised Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy, could put up no fight as the Australian bowlers cleaned up the lower order.

Australia as a team was led to the victory with the help of their bowlers Scott Boland and Pat Cummins. Both picked up three wickets each while Nathan Lyon dismissed two wickets.The Australian bowlers made good use of the conditions, utilizing bounce with precision to reduce the Indian batting order to rubble.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Dismissal Controversy

Among the game-featuring moments, the decision which most probably stunned every onlooker was regarding the Yashasvi Jaiswal, who played valiantly for the team throughout the day. As Jaiswal attempting a pull shot, He was ruled out caught behind by third umpire from Bangladesh despite no evidence on the Snicko meter.  Jaiswal’s wicket changed the game for Australia. This was the second time Jaiswal missed the century in the match.

India’s Bowling Performance

India’s bowlers, led by Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, had their moments in the match but ended up being inconsistent. On day five, Bumrah managed to take wicket of Nathan Lyon early, but the damage had already been done by the lower middle order batters of Australia, particularly Scott Boland and Lyon.

Batting Highlights of Australia

The batting of Australia was pretty much sound and precise with a few substantial contributions. The main thrust came from the bat of Smith who scored a superb century in the first innings scoring 140 runs, whereas  Labuschange, Khawaja, Kontas made fifty.

WTC Point after the fourth test

With the latest loss, India’s WTC PCT has now dropped down to 52.78% placing them third on the table after South Africa and Australia. Having suffered their seventh defeat in this cycle, India’s route to the end has become tougher, with remaining encounters now becoming key to their advancement.
