After winning the toss, New Zealand set a target of 252 for India. In what has now become a record for the most consecutive toss losses, Rohit Sharma makes it 12. With this, Rohit equals a record set by legends Brian Lara who suffered a similar streak between ’98-’99. This was India’s 15th consecutive toss defeat.
India’s bowling performance was strong, limiting New Zealand to just 251/7 in their 50 overs. Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami also supported them by taking one wicket each.
New Zealand’s batting started well, with openers Rachin Ravindra and Will Young scoring 57 runs. Rachin Ravindra scored 37 runs off 29 balls. New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra was named Player of the Tournament also in the 2025 Champions Trophy after scoring 263 runs in four matches which included two centuries, and took 3 wickets. Daryl Mitchell top-scored with 63 runs from 101 balls, and Michael Bracewell added a quick 53 runs off 40 balls to help New Zealand reach 251 runs.
India’s chase started brilliantly, thanks to a match-winning partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Both added 105 runs in just 18.4 overs, setting a strong foundation. Rohit Sharma was aggressive, hitting 7 boundaries and 3 big sixes. Shubman Gill scored a steady 31 runs.
India faced trouble when Gill and Virat Kohli got out quickly. But Rohit Sharma held the innings together until his dismissal at 76 runs. After Rohit, a crucial match-winning partnership between Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29) stabilized the innings. They added 61 important runs for the fourth wicket.
The match became tense again after Iyer and Axar Patel got out. But another crucial partnership between KL Rahul (34 not out) and Hardik Pandya (18) took India close to victory. Rahul’s calm batting under pressure and Pandya’s support made sure India kept control.
In the end, Ravindra Jadeja finished the match in style, hitting the winning runs with one over remaining. India reached their target in just 49 overs, sealing a memorable victory.
With this victory, India has now won three Champions Trophy titles. Rohit Sharma became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC trophies. This victory adds to Rohit’s successful record after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024.
