What is the SpaDeX Mission?

The SpaDeX mission is one of a kind which has been developed and initiated by the ISRO in an effort to make it possible to independently dock two spacecraft without needing active involvement from the crew members while in low Earth orbit. This form of technology will be essential in achieving future objectives like constructing a space station or having services on satellites

Key Objectives of SpaDeX

  • Demonstrate In-Space Docking: For the first time, ISRO will bring together and dock two satellites in orbit.
  • Prepare for India’s Space Station: It will help ISRO’s plan to establish a modular space station by 2035.
  • Enable Satellite Servicing: Opens the door for on-orbit maintenance, refueling, and repairs.

Payload Details

PSLV-C60 will carry two identical satellites, SDX01 and SDX02, weighing about 220 kg each. These satellites are meant to be placed in a 470-km circular orbit. The main aim is to carry out docking and undocking in orbit autonomously.

Innovations in PSLV-C60 Mission

This is the first time ISRO has integrated its PSLV launch vehicle at a dedicated integration facility and then moved it to the launch pad. So far, the rocket was assembled directly at the pad. The innovation marks an increase in operational efficiency.

Why Space Docking Matters for India

The docking technology is one of the important milestones for India’s space ambitions and will help:

  • Human Spaceflight: Essential for Gaganyaan and other crewed missions to come
  • Space Station: Helps India’s plan to set up a space station.
  • Interplanetary Missions: Allows for the docking of large spacecraft for extended missions.
Global Cooperation: Puts India at the forefront of advanced space technologies.
