Religious History and Roots

The history of Kumbh Mela can be traced back to the eighth-century Hindu philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who organized spiritual assemblies and introduced the monastery system with 13 akharas (groups of warrior monks). According to Hindu mythology, the origin of the Kumbh Mela is linked to the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean). It is believed drops of nectar fell at four sites, this includes Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. It is also believed that taking a holy dip in these sites forgives sins and would grant salvation (moksha).

The Kumbh is believed to have spiritual importance because of how it is connected to the Samudra Manthan. It is believed that Lord Vishnu transformed into Mohini and got the nectar of immortality from the demons. This nectar is said to have dropped onto four holy locations, and people believe that being a part of these spots during the Kumbh would wash their sins away and enlighten their spirits.
