Martin Guptill has decided to retire from International Cricket

New Zealand cricket superstar Martin Guptill has decided to retire from the game. Guptill, arguably one of the best white-ball cricket openers in New Zealand has decided to retire after racking up a total of 367 matches for the country. He scored more than 13000 runs across all formats of cricket with 23 centuries as well. People and his fans will always remember his terrific bullet throw in which he got MS Dhoni out during the semifinals of the 2019 World Cup that ended the dream of India in the world cup and moved New Zealand to the finals.

Guptill at the age of 38 now, has made his international debut in 2009 in a match against West Indies .His last International match came in October of 2022 where he played against the Bangladesh. He is the third highest run scorer as an ODI player with 7346 runs for New Zealand and the highest for T20I with 3531 runs. He also hit a total of 173 sixes while playing T20Is as the New zealander who has hit the most.

Achievements That Guptill Is Most Famous For

World Cup Record: In the 2015 World Cup quarterfinal, Guptill scored an unbeaten 237 against the West Indies. It remains the highest score in ODI World Cup history. He is also the first New Zealand player to score a double century in the format of ODI with this inning.

Guptill’s ability to clear boundaries was unmatched. In his 237-run knock against the West Indies, he scored 162 runs through boundaries, which is second to Rohit Sharma’s feat – the India opener scored 186 runs from boundaries out of 264 during his world-record knock against Sri Lanka in 2014.

Multiple 180+ Scores: Guptill has three ODI scores of 180-plus, equaling Rohit Sharma and Fakhar Zaman. His highest scores are 189* against England in 2013, 237 against West Indies in 2015 and 180* against South Africa in 2017.

T20 Franchise Career

Even though he retired from international cricket, Guptill, the current captain of the Auckland Aces will still play T20 franchise leagues. All these years, he participated with Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Karachi Kings. He recently joined Biratnagar Kings in Nepal Premier League where he became the first player to score a fifty in the Epic history of this tournament.

  • Tests: 2,586 runs in 89 innings and an average of 29.38
  • ODIs: 7,346 runs in 195 innings and an average of 41.73
  • T20Is: 3,531 runs in 118 innings and an average of 31.81
