Mumbai Court Grants 5-Day Police Custody For The Accused in Bollywood Actor Saif Ali Khan Attack Case
The accused in the Saif Ali Khan attack case, identified as Shafiqul Islam, has been remanded to 5-day police custody. A court in Mumbai’s Bandra made the decision on Sunday.
The accused was taken into custody by the Mumbai police in the morning on Sunday. He was captured at the Hiranandani Estate, situated on the Ghodbunder Road, which is a part of Thane district. This person, ‘Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad,’ is reportedly a Bangladeshi who entered India illegally. As per the officials, he had managed to change his name to ‘Bijoy Das’ and was residing in Mumbai for the past few months and doing menial jobs.
The accused was presented before the Bandra holiday court at around 1.30 pm. Though seeking the remand for 14 days, the police were later granted a period of 5 days.
The Accused’s Lawyer Argues the Facts
The lawyer of the accused dismissed the claim of citizenship of Bangladeshi origin. He asserted that his client has been living in Thane for over seven years. The lawyer also added that the client’s family stays in Mumbai and the police have no evidence to support their claim.
Update Relating To Saif Ali Khan’s Health Status
On Thursday, at around two am, Saif was stabbed six times, including in the neck and shoulder, at his Bandra West flat. He was subsequently taken to the Lilavati hospital for treatment.
Surgeons had to extract a 2.5-inch piece of blade embedded into his spine. But now Saif, as per the doctors, is stable and out of danger.
Judicial Observations
As per the allegations set against the accused, the accusations made were serious and indeed well justified. Further, the court, in consideration, stated that the case is at a very early stage and therefore justice would require time and the police would do an investigation.
The police reported that the accused was a person from Bangladesh, and the conspiracy behind the crime needs to be figured out. In addition, they stated that there is a need to check whether there was any international conspiracy behind it or not.
The court validated the police standpoint and declared that the claim regarding an international conspiracy cannot be termed impossible.
