The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Men’s Selection Committee has added all-rounder Tanush Kotian from Mumbai to India’s squad for the ongoing match series against Australia. Off-spinner who is set to debut, Tanush replaces Ravichandran Ashwin who recently announced his retirement after a draw game against Australia in Brisbane. It is evident the selectors are on a mission to not only endorse domestic success but adhere to it as well.
Tanush Kotian-Who is he?
Off spiner and right hand batsman, Tanush Kotian has proven to be one of the best in his field. The 26 year old has played 33 first class matches and claimed 101 wickets with an impressive average of 25.70. In recent tournaments, aiming for even bigger gains, he scored two centuries and 13 half centuries, alongside three five-wicket hauls.
Domestic Excellence Rewarded: Kotian Part of Test Squad
Kotian’s selection comes as a reward for his outstanding performance in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, where he played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s title-winning campaign. The all-rounder was named Player of the Tournament, having scored 502 runs at an average of 41.83 and claiming 29 wickets at an exceptional average of 16.96.
India A Exposure and International Potential
To include Kotian in the squad is not his first contact of international exposure. The player formed part of India A and has also played the second first class match against Australia A at MCG. His exposure to India A reposte shows that he is ready for the game at test level.
Mumbai’s Star Performer in Ranji Trophy
A lot can be attributed to Kotian’s all round performance for Mumbai’s achievement in this Ranji Trophy campaign. He was always on target, and he never failed to fire with bat in hand as well. Many of his exemplary performances aided in the 42nd occasion where Mumbai has won the coveted trophy in its history.
Filling Ashwin’s Shoes: A Tall Order Ahead
After Ravichandran Ashwin retires, many will see Kotian as the new spin-bowling all-rounder for India, which is a huge responsibility. His performances in domestic matches and during pressure matches show that he is a suitable candidate for being a permanent feature in the Test squad for a long time.
