TikTok Ban in US: Apple, Google Remove App as Federal Ban Takes Effect

TikTok Removed From US App Stores As Federal Ban Goes Into Effect, India Had Already Banned Tiktok in 2020

As stated in an Associated Press story, many TikTok users from the US were presented with a stunning notification on a Saturday. Apple and Google blocked the app as the new federal restriction on TikTok came into effect, rendering the well-known social media application unusable for Americans. The Americans are now left without access as the app has been removed from both Apple and Google app stores.

What Is The Reason For The US Ban On Tiktok?

President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act back in April, and that is what led to the ban. The US Supreme Court found no objection to this bill on Friday. The legislation enunciates restrictions on apps owned by firms with links to foreign nations for national security reasons. Furthermore, the US government argued that the Chinese parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, would compromise personal information and use the app for nefarious activities.

India Had Already Banned TikTok

The United States is not the first country to issue a ban on the application TikTok because on June 29 of the year 2020, this application, along with fifty-eight other Chinese applications, were banned in India by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was during the times when there were escalating conflicts between India and China that stemmed from a violent altercation on the LAC (line of actual control).

The Indian Government later proceeded to blame TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, due to concerns of security, especially when it came to the data being used in such applications. This ban on the application was in the interest of Indian National Security as there were growing tensions in that region.

What Happens to Tiktok Now in the US?

A message was displayed for the users when they tried to use TikTok in the US, saying: “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now. There is a law that prohibits the use of Tiktok in the US.” However, the message also provided a glimmer of hope: “Fortunately, President Trump has announced that he will cooperate with us in order to find a solution that would allow Tiktok to be used again once he takes office. “Further, TikTok stated that unless the Biden administration intervenes, their service in the United States will cease to deliver the service.”

Effect on Lemon8

Other application owned by Tikok’s parent company ByteDance, Lemon8, has also been affected. A notification message was sent to those wishing to use Lemon8 saying that it is no longer available in America. The app had gained popularity before the ban.

The strategy of Donald Trump and Biden’s Administration

Donald Trump, who is the president-elect, stated that he is going to offer an extension of 90 days to TikTok. He said that it might be helpful in allowing TikTok to operate. He is expected to announce this decision after taking an oath on Monday.

In a different perspective, Shou Chew, the Chief Executive Officer of TikTok, has disclosed that he intends to be in attendance at Donald Trump’s inauguration. The Supreme Court was recently introduced by the advocates of TikTok with an oral submission arguing that the prohibitive legislation for the application is a violation of free speech law. The government of the US maintained, however, that ownership of the app by Byte Dance is a security threat.

China Eyes Elon Musk to Buy TikTok

According to reports by Bloomberg, the Chinese government is looking for a plan for SpaceX founder Elon Musk to buy TikTok’s US assets and takeover the operations. To save the app in America, this could be a possible path.

Conclusion

The prohibition on TikTok may set off one of the most massive layoffs in the United States. A plethora of TikTok employees might be laid off. The application’s disappearance might also affect several businesses that are dependent on the app.
